Panic
Disorder
A panic attack is an episode of unexpected terror accompanied
by a variety of physical symptoms. Associated symptoms include
fear and anxiety as well as catastrophic thinking with a sense
of impending doom or the belief that loss of control, death or
insanity is imminent. Panic attacks usually last from 5 to 30
minutes, with symptoms peaking at about 10 minutes. They can occur
during the day or at night during sleep.
Symptoms can include palpitations, pounding heart or accelerated
heart rate; sweating, trembling or shaking; sensations of shortness
of breath or smothering; feelings of choking, chest pain or discomfort;
nausea or abdominal distress; feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded
or faint; fear of dying; or chills or hot flushes.
