How to fill
out a job application
REMEMBER: THE APPLICATION IS YOUR ‘TICKET TO THE INTERVIEW"
1. Dress appropriately. Make a good first impression. Also, you
may be called right then for the interview.
2. Read the directions before you write.
3. Be prepared. Take all the information you might need with you:
| a. |
Dates
and addresses of all previous work experience (paid and volunteer)
|
| b. |
Names
and addresses of schools attended |
| c. |
License
numbers, social security number, health card, etc. |
| d. |
Resume
(if you have one) |
4. Print
neatly, or type. Make sure your spelling and grammar are correct.
Take two copies of the application - just in case. Be positive
that the application is easily readable.
5. Take the time to do it right. You may want to pick up the application
and take it with you to the library, park, or home to fill it
out.
6. Answer all the items or explain items left blank.
7. Include any and all skills that apply to this job (including
hobbies, clubs, volunteer work, etc.).
8. Attempt to write up your skills and experience to match what
you think the employer is looking for. Don't sell yourself short;
include information that would give the employer a better picture
of your special talents and skills. Sell yourself.
9. If there are problem questions about your health, legal status,
or reasons for leaving school or jobs, try to be as positive as
possible and leave long explanations for the interview. Then be
prepared to deal with the question later.
10. Take your own pen! (Black ink)
11. Have someone proofread your application.
