U.S. FOREST SERVICE

With more than 18,000 employees, the U.S. Forest Service manages 193 million acres of public lands in national forests and grasslands. And whenever one of those nearly 20 thousand employees needs a new uniform, it is HTC that prepares, packages and ships it. “This entire project is the first of its kind in the country and in the disability community,” said Rick Sebastian, president/CEO of HTC. “We’re the pioneers.”

Forest Service employees purchase uniform components including socks, shirts, pants, hats, belts and winter jackets from a website administered by Supply Chain Logistics. Pants are tailored by Northern Apparel for length, names tags are manufactured by HTC employees, and Graphtex completes any necessary embroidery. Packaging and assembly staff fold, tag and bag the orders before they’re shipped to the customers. The website even manages the employees’ allocations provided by the Forest Service to purchase uniforms. In one month alone, as many as 10,000 items can be shipped. “We’re very responsive,” said Paul Huening, vice president of sales, marketing and government affairs for HTC. “The turnaround time on an order is three days — and this is custom apparel.”

People with disabilities serve as the first point of contact as customer service representatives for the 18,000 customers, as well as fulfill the individual orders. “This has been a huge opportunity,” Sebastian said. “We have always had a ‘we can exceed what you need done’ attitude. And now, our employees are making a difference with a huge federal agency.”
